| Festival of Flight | |
Saturday, May 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., H.L. "Sonny" Callahan Airport, Highway 32, Fairhope | |
Viet Nam Era Planes Get Nod at 2008 Fairhope Festival of Flight Fairhope, AL – The Fairhope Festival of Flight for 2008 will be held for a third year on Armed Forces Day, May 17. “We have settled on staying with this day every year as a way of paying tribute to all the men and women in the various branches of service”, said Chuck Zunk, Chairman of the Fairhope Airport Authority. 2008 will mark the third year for the air show and fly-in that has grown in both numbers of aircraft displayed and attendance. The first year, 2006, enjoyed a commendable attendance of around 6,000 which grew to over 15,000 in 2007. “I think the word is getting around that we put on quite a show” said King Palmer, the Executive Director of this year’s event. “The addition of aerobatic acts in 2007 really got us noticed, and this year, we move to another level by putting our active military aircraft participants in the air” stated King. Already committed for this year is a pair of U.S. Air Force A-10 Warthog ground attack jets, Marine Corps Harriers, a Navy F-18 Hornet, Marine Corps C-130, a variety of Army and Marine Corps helicopters including an Apache and a Cobra. As a special nod to the Viet Nam era, there will be an AD-5 Skyraider and OV-2 and L-17 spotter planes. A heritage flight is anticipated by examples of all Navy training aircraft from the Stearman through the latest T-6. Other vintage aircraft expected at the festival include the B-25 “Yellow Rose of Texas”, an F-4U, and P-51. These planes caused quite a stir last year, among young and old alike with many never having actually heard or seen them fly in person. “It’s just not the same seeing them in a movie or on TV”, said King. There will be continuous activity with the four scheduled aerobatic acts and formation flying on tap. Of special note will be an appearance by Alex “Gabby” Land, the youngest member of the U.S. National (Aerobatic) Team, in his Extra 300L, who will be competing in the World Championships later this year. With the recent announcement of the Northrop Grumman / EADS KC45 Tanker contract award across the bay in Mobile, we are excited about the continued growth of the aviation industry in the Fairhope area”, stated Zunk. “We want to show everyone that the Fairhope Airport industrial area is a great location for suppliers with a very supportive public.” For more information, contact Rod Platt, Red Drum Marketing at 251-928-5281 or by email to rod@big-red-drum.com.
